So I want to talk about something that people don’t like talking about. Something that is uncomfortable.
And that is erectile dysfunction, or ED.
Most things related to sex are often looked at as “taboo” or “inappropriate” but...I disagree. Sex is a HUGE part of our lives and well being and I think we should talk about it MORE.
ED is something that physically affects men but (obviously) affects women too! Men and couples who are struggling with ED can have heightened relationship issues if it’s swept under the rug, not talked about, or if there is blame / shame assigned. ED is treatable and there are A LOT of things that can be done to help...so let’s dive in!
ED is the inability to keep an erection for intercourse. It’s not uncommon for men to
o c c a s i o n a l l y suffer from ED - this is usually a psychological cause often related to performance anxiety, depression, stress, or underlying relationship problems. Again,
o c c a s i o n a l ED is not uncommon and it does not mean that something more serious is going on.
If you or your partner have a consistent or ongoing problem with ED, it’s p o s s i b l e an underlying health issue could be the cause. This can get quite complex because there are multiple factors that go into achieving and maintaining an erection like...
1) A man’s brain
2) A man's hormones
3) A man's emotions
4) A man's nerves
5) A man's muscles
6) And a man's blood vessels.
There could be an issue with ANY combination of these things. Some of the more common causes of ED include heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, and even some medications.
So how do we fix this? Well, making healthy lifestyle changes and managing any underlying diseases can significantly help. But depending on the severity of your ED, there are medications to help you not only achieve but also maintain an erection sufficient for intercourse.
